Words of Advice or Warnings from our Elders

How often did we receive a `telling off`` or some other form of advice for something or another that we did or didn`t do?

Our parents or elders always seemed to have a word or saying for all eventualities.  I am adding some here that I was proferred at some time or another.  Have you any that have stayed in your minds  all these years?

On arising in the morning, my grandma would enquire if I had clean underwear on.  "What will the doctor or nurses think if you have an accident?"

Leaving some food on my plate at the end of a meal, I would be told that there were many starving bairns oot there who would be glad o` it.

If ever I was proposing to do something in the future, my grandma would counter with, "If what?"   I would reply, "If God spares me."  To this day I always add this to my plans for the future.

If I was a cause for despair, my grandma would say she would get the jail for me.

If I had the temerity to ask my grandparents their age, I would get the answer that they were older than their teeth but as young as their thumbs.
