Book Reception by Oldleithers within one week of Publication
Book arrived today, 26/08/09 between the 'greeting' and the laughing, canny put it doon, well done John, and everybody who contributed. Talk about your 'golf' widows, my wife says she's a 'Water o' Leith Widow' LOL. I feel the 'Booker' prize calling.

My wife and I have not been able to put the book down since it arrived I think with us being in the upper age a lot of things we did are all coming back to us now. I have already congratulated John by e/mail and I do so on behalf of the old Leithers. I hope to e/mail some of you with names of neighbours you have mentioned in Bangor Road and Lane Thanks to all. Yours.
Murdo Stewart, Longniddry
Hi John!
Just received my book this am. Many thanks! I shall be happy to let you know my feelings but just having it is a pleasure already! One of my son's is a Leith fanatic and an other will be visiting soon from Australia so I may have to guard my copy with my life! I shall certainly be in touch if further copies are required
My husband is a couple of years younger than you and I am four years younger but who knows our paths may have crossed at some moment in time.
I can only imagine your feelings having seen your book in print and well done you! Good luck with it.
Regards, Lilian Graham, Portobello
Book arrived this morning so am now way behind in my housework!
Congratulations John…it really is super and a lot more interesting than a lot of the other ones about Leith. There’s nothing like people’s memories for telling the story of a community. Best wishes
Rita Crombie, Leith
See,everything comes to he who waits. Not forgetting she....When you have read it digested it re-read it and read it again.Think to the New Motto on site, The Future history of Leith....ALL our past memories will never be forgotten...WHEN WE GO! THEY STAY IN PRINT FOREVER!
This is where I say to all those who did take the time to make a contribution to the Book. A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO ONE AND ALL. Just consider the next step. As I am sure it is when, not if these books sell-out. Would you be prepared to go forward with your individual stories? I feel there are two ways to go forward, but, this is for the rest of us to come up with the right response. REMEMBER, if it was not for John, and his devotion to Leith, our memories would pass away with us. NOT ANY MORE...CONGRATULATIONS, JOHN..

Hello John,
Well the TV wasn't on here last night! Congratulations on 'The Book' - it's not just the binding that's 'perfect'. You should be very proud.
May I ask where the item - 'The other Leith' is on the site? I recently acquired a communion token from 'Lake Shore Line' (New Annan & Leith) and am curious to know if this is the same church as previously mentioned & pictured. By coincidence the same month as you were at a wedding in Owen Sound some time ago I came across its token.
Keep up the good work
Regards
George Ainslie, Melrose
I grudgingly put THE BOOK down to make the dinner tonight and I think it's going to be a family heirloom in the future. What a labour of love John's undertaken in encouraging contributors and putting the whole thing together to produce such a great record of memories for all of us. Grateful thanks, John!

Hi John,
Thank you, we received our copy of the book today. We have obviously had a quick glance through it and we must say it looks great - well done. We will let you have our comments when we finish reading it. We both said now that there were various other things we could have mentioned, but never mind we are dying to get into it.
Cheers for now John.
Liz & Frank, (Condie), Leith
*A very interesting read with some wonderful nostalgic photos - it is amazing how similar our memories are and our fondness for the uniqueness of Leith shines through on every page.*

I just wanted to thank all who contributed to the book. I enjoyed it immensely and congratulate all concerned. I found it amusing, informative and moving! After 60 years in Leith it jogged many a memory for me! Thanks!
I have 3 sons, 2 who were born in the house in Leith who slag the eldest off as he was born in Simpson's EDINBURGH and so it continues

Hi John
Postie has delivered the book. It is a treat to read a book that has not been written by professional researchers. The photo of the dredger by Menzies brings back the clanking noise of the steam crane and the smell of the mud I used to watch from Menzies Yard. The ultimate in coffee table books. A fantastic piece of sunny Leith bringing back the sounds and smells, horses, Buckie wives. The Shore at low tide all gone but captured in John’s book.
Also the article about the cooks on the trawlers could have been written about my auld man. I appreciate all the work that you put in collating the information and presenting it in a fashion that us Keelies can read and read again.
Let us PERSEVERE
BILL (Elliot), Annan
Thanks John it's great. As it happens I was talking to your mother this morning and telling her all about it. I'll take my copy into Donaldson Court to show her and the other residents.
Best Wishes

Just returned from the Oregon Coast after a few days to find two copies of the book waiting for us when we got home.
Very impressed by the presentation and great reading, bringing back lots of memories. In fact as we read through the contributions, more memories and past stories we'd heard as kids came flooding back that Rosemary and I spoke about. Photos were great.
You've created a wonderful walk down memory lane and I'm sure it was a lot of hard work on your part - so thank you John - you truly are “The Ambassador of Leith".

John, as a postscript to my earlier congratulations, I have a further comment.
The reason I purchased two books was to give one to my daughter who is a high school teacher here in the US - but I'm glad I did for another darned good reason. Since they've arrived (several days now) I haven't been able to pry "my" copy out of my wife's hands. Rosemary is from Graham Street and just loves this book to bits. My daughter is going to have to wait for her copy as we read, and re-read our favorite parts.

Hi all, THE BOOK has just arrived in the far flung Southern Antipodes. Many thanks to John and all the various authors.

John
Ca' oaf the dugs....the book arrived in excellent condition today via "Pony Express"....it maybe had a coupla beads o sweat on it because it is an unusually hot steamy 102*F here today.
Having just glanced at it, I am sure it will be on the best seller list within a coupla weeks. The book is certainly a documentary of oor Leith days, and many thanks go to all the contributors.
Congratulations to you John for producing and making this magnificent accomplishment possible.
Yours Aye,
Alex, (Sandie) San Diego, Ca., USA
Hi John,
The book has arrived and I’ve trying not to read it all in one sitting – but had to have a peek ahead
I see some in USofA and Canada are still patiently waiting – I reckon my copy made it here very smartly having picked it up today just 7 days after ordering – and it may well have been in my PO Box earlier since I don’t collect daily.
Great service - and a personally signed copy – cheers!!!
A big effort and commitment John – well done. Sorry I couldn’t really contribute – I’m not enough of a true Leither to have those sorts of memories – lots of Sunday family evenings and occasional workplace visits at my dad’s but not enough to have those detailed recollections of being ‘brought up’ there.

Hi John
Just to let you know book arrived today. Not had much of a chance to read a lot of it but what I have read I have found to be very informative and funny. It brought back some memories. Some of the streets I am unsure of so I will use my map of Leith to find them, then I will hopefully be able to visualise the street. I have not been back to Scotland for 40 years nearly 41 years and as I don't have any contact with anyone in Leith you do tend to forget. I lived in Graham Street for 21 years from 1947-1968 and my dad was a docker then a trade union rep for the docks his name was Alex or Sandy Arundel. Maybe one day when I retire I will go for a holiday but as everything seems to have changed from looking on street view I don't know. Maybe I will just stay in Australia.
Thanks for the book and all your effort you have put into it.
Wilma Tatnell nee Arundel, Victoria, Australia
