Leith Song

Sent in by Liz Condie
:Afraid I don`t know the tune

They tore down the Kirkgate,
They ripped out our heart,
They closed down the Shipyards
That set us apart
They starved us of money
And spent it elsewhere
And nobody thought
that the Leithers would care

CHORUS -

LEITH LEITH DON`T GIVE US GRIEF
COS YOU ARE HARD ON THE SURFACE
AND SOFT UNDERNEATH
YOUR HISTORY`S STIRRING
AND BEYOND BELIEF
WE STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD
AND YOUR RIGHT TO BE PROUD
OF THE PLACE THAT THEY CALL SUNNY LEITH.

Then in 1920 they let us all down
Ignoring the Leithers
they snatched up our town
they paid no attention
to what they had bought
they paid no attention
to what Leithers thought

CHORUS

They had no idea
about how Leith ticks
they thought we`d be happy
To be EH6
To be just a suburb
Identity nil
But Leith had no wish
to be run of the mill.

CHORUS

But now things are changing
around us we see
signs of a re-birth
that`s sprung from the sea
It`s not quite the old Leith
That never could be
But this is our chance
to grab prosperity

CHORUS

Britannia, the Wine Bars,
smart offices, flats
The half-million penthouses
that`s where it`s at.
It`s not quite the Kirkgate
but surely you`ll give
It`s a good place work
and to worship and live.
