Macmillan Nurses

How many of us have need to thank these wonderful nurses, nobody knows. At the time of need when one is nearing the end of this mortal life, Macmillan Nurses come into their own.  They do not have the satisfaction of seeing recovery.  Only the belief that they have done a job of making the passing bearable.  I know this only too well.

Olive: 1934-1998

In 1998, my wife Olive had much to thank these girls for their dedicated attention in making sure her last hours were comfortable.

Not only did they attend to her, but I received much comfort from them too as they said there was more than one patient.

After Olives passing, I was asked to attend their premises in St John’s Hospital, Livingston as often as I wished. Here I was offered counselling one to one.  Sometimes I broke down sobbing.  Get it out, I was encouraged.  Eventually I was able to resume my life.

For a number of years after, I organised quiz evenings in the Rugby Club with all profits going to the Macmillan foundation.

Oldleither.com came about from this. With Olive’s passing I set about writing her story and then mine.  The latter went onto the web and eventually developed into what it is today.

Now my son has taken up this challenge and is competing in a marathon in Inverness in October.  He told me he is doing this for the same cause.

If you wish to contribute, then be sure and attach Oldleither after your name.

Here are the details.   Click here.

Many thanks,
John
