Warriston Cemetery

Now closed

The following photograps taken by Ian J Russell (my son`s friend) show what the 19th Century section is like today.  It resembles a jungle with tombstones hidden behind decades of clinging ivy.

There is no noise from the outside, the atmosphere is tranquil and to paraphrase the pun, there is a deathly silence.  Having said this, it is not frightening in any sense.  You just have a feeling of appreciation for those Victorians interred here.

On a personal note, my great, great grandparents and immediate family on my fathers maternal side, Stalkers, are laid to rest here.  Unfortunately their headstone lies wedged in a tree.  Thanks to the authority, they are going to free this soon at no cost to myself.  My great grandfather, David Stalker once owned and ran the marine instrument maker of that name in Commercial Street opposite the Customs House.
